    Obama is going to run for the presidency... again !

    This document is an article from a newspaper, « The Chicago Tribune ».

    It was written by Stephen Clark.

    Since 2008, he has started to withdraw troops from Iraq.

    He has caught and killed Oussama Bin Laden.

    He has helped the economy.

    If he is elected, he WILL make the American econmy stronger.

    He WILL close the Guantanamo military base in Cuba.

    He WILL find a peaceful solution in Afghanistan.

     

    VOCABULARY

    # make (→ made, made) : faire, construire

    # a highlight : un moment important

    # withdraw (withdrew, withdrawn) : retirer

    # enough : assez # peaceful : paisible

    # find (→ found, found) : trouver

    # catch (→ caught, caught) : attraper

    # run for the presidency : être candidat à...

    Pour faire un bilan « passé-présent » on utilise le Present Perfect :

    HAVE (au présent) + Participe Passé

    Rappel : Participe Passé, c'est :

    # Soit 3e colonne des verbes irréguliers

    Pour faire une prédiction par rapport au futur, on utilise : WILL + Verbe

    Ex : In 10 years, Mr Cheikh WILL be president of a major company.

    Martin Luther King's Speech

    This document is a speech by Martin Luther King. He gave this speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. In 1963.

    He spoke about the « Negro Slaves », discrimination, segregation and freedom.

    He talked about the Emancipation Proclamation, WHICH was the end / abolition of slavery in 1863.

    He said that one hundred years later black people were not free and he wanted equality.

    Pour rapporter les paroles de quelqu'un, on utilise le discours indirect.

    On a besoin d'un verbe introducteur :

    # say # claim # affirm # argue

    On peut relier le verbe introducteur et ce qui est cité avec « that ». A l'oral, ce n'est pas obligatoire

    Ex : He said (that) black people were not free.

     

    « I HAVE A DREAM »

    Martin Luther King said (that) he had a dream.

    He said / claimed he had a dream that his four children would not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.

    He said he had a dream that white children and black children would join hands AS brothers and sisters.

    Malcolm X was MORE aggressive THAN Martin Luther King. He was angriER.

    Martin Luther King was MORE optimistic THAN Malcolm X. He was wisER THAN Malcolm X.

    Pour rapporter les prédictions futures de quelqu'un (formulées avec WILL), on a besoin de WOULD.

    Ex : « I will kill you ! »→He said he would kill her

    Pour comparer 2 choses / 2 personnes on utilise :

    # ADJ long : MORE ADJ THAN

    Ex : He is more optimistic than Malcolm X

    # ADJ court : ADJ+er THAN

    Ex : HE is wiser than Malcolm X

    Rosa Parks

    This document is a scene from a film.

    The scene took place in 1955 on a bus in Alabama.

    A black woman sat at the front of the bus and the driver wanted her to move at the back.

    She refused, so the driver called the police.

    The police arrested Rosa because she sat at the front of the bus, and black people COULDN'T sit at the front of the bus, they HAD TO sit at the back of the bus.

    Black people COULD NOT (COULDN'T) go to the same schools.

    Black people COULD NOT vote.

    There was racial segregation between white and black people in America...

    VOCABULARY

    # refuse: refuser

    # go (→ went): aller # leave (→ left): partir

    # sit (→ sat): s'asseoir, être assis

    # ask: demander # answer: répondre

    # a bench: un banc

    Pour parler de ce qu'on POUVAIT faire on utilise COULD (CAN au passé):

    Ex: Black people COULD NOT vote (COULDN'T)

    Pour parler de ce qu'on DEVAIT faire, on utilise HAD TO (HAVE TO au passé)

    Ex: They HAD TO sit at the back of the bus.

     

    Obama becomes President

    This document is a radio interview with two Obama supporters.

    This interview took place / happened in November 2008.

    Obama's slogan was « Yes we can! ».

    He also said « I have a dream » like Martin Luther King. He is the first African-American President of the United States.

    Dwayne was very happy.

    Dwayne spoke about slavery: black people HAD TO work for white people for free.

    Dwayne also talked about segregation:

    # Black people COULDN'T sit at the front of the bus.

    # They COULDN'T go to the same schools as white people.

    # They COULDN'T sit on the same benches in the parks

    # They COULDN'T vote

    Etc.

    In Memory of Rosa Parks

    This scene took place in the United States on December 1st 1955.

    A black woman went on a bus, sat down and the driver wanted her to move at the back, but she refused to move.

    So the driver called the police and Rosa was arrested. She went to prison / jail.

    She was arrested because black people

    HAD TO sit at the back of the bus.

    They / The African Americans COULD NOT sit at the front of the bus.

    Actually / In fact / Basically this document is an example of segregation in America in the 1950s.
