    Rosa Parks

    This document is a scene from a film.

    The scene took place in 1955 on a bus in Alabama.

    A black woman sat at the front of the bus and the driver wanted her to move at the back.

    She refused, so the driver called the police.

    The police arrested Rosa because she sat at the front of the bus, and black people COULDN'T sit at the front of the bus, they HAD TO sit at the back of the bus.

    Black people COULD NOT (COULDN'T) go to the same schools.

    Black people COULD NOT vote.

    There was racial segregation between white and black people in America...

    VOCABULARY

    # refuse: refuser

    # go (→ went): aller # leave (→ left): partir

    # sit (→ sat): s'asseoir, être assis

    # ask: demander # answer: répondre

    # a bench: un banc

    Pour parler de ce qu'on POUVAIT faire on utilise COULD (CAN au passé):

    Ex: Black people COULD NOT vote (COULDN'T)

    Pour parler de ce qu'on DEVAIT faire, on utilise HAD TO (HAVE TO au passé)

    Ex: They HAD TO sit at the back of the bus.

     

    Obama becomes President

    This document is a radio interview with two Obama supporters.

    This interview took place / happened in November 2008.

    Obama's slogan was « Yes we can! ».

    He also said « I have a dream » like Martin Luther King. He is the first African-American President of the United States.

    Dwayne was very happy.

    Dwayne spoke about slavery: black people HAD TO work for white people for free.

    Dwayne also talked about segregation:

    # Black people COULDN'T sit at the front of the bus.

    # They COULDN'T go to the same schools as white people.

    # They COULDN'T sit on the same benches in the parks

    # They COULDN'T vote

    Etc.
