Before Hiroshima

The United States dropped an atomic bomb in Hiroshima on August 9th 1945.

In 1941 the Japanese HAD ATTACKED the USA in Pearl Harbor.

In 1942 Oppenheimer HAD BECOME the director of the Manhattan Project to make an atomic bomb.

In April 1945, President Roosevelt HAD DIED and Harry Truman HAD SUCCEEDED him / HAD BECOME President.

Before Hiroshima the USA HAD ASKED the Japanese to surrender.

VOCABULARY

# surrender: se rendre

# give up: abandonner

# become (→ became/become): devenir

# drop: larguer, faire tomber

# otherwise: sinon

# die: mourir # dead: mort, morte

# ask: demander # answer: répondre

Before Hiroshima

In August 1945 the Americans dropped an atomic bomb in Hiroshima, in Japan.

Before Hiroshima, in 1941, the Japanese HAD ATTACKED Pearl Harbor by surprise.

In 1942, Oppenheimer HAD BECOME director of the « Manhattan Project » to make an atomic bomb.

In 1945 President Roosevelt HAD DIED and Truman HAD BECOME President.

In July 1945, the USA HAD TESTED the first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert.

Pour parler d'un événement passé ayant lieu avant un autre événement passé (« Passé du passé »), on utilise:

HAD + Participe Passé

Rappel/ Le participe Passé, c'est:

# Soit Verbe Irrégulier, 3e colonne.
